Hi there! So I really love the movie Tangled, and this blog is insanely awesome. :3

I just thought I’d share with you what my (somewhat evil) history teacher made my class do…
Our assignment was to write a treaty for a Disney animated movie on an event in the movie that could be related to an actual event in US history. I chose Tangled, of course, relating Rapunzel’s desire for freedom from Mother Gothel to the US Colonies’ desire to break away from Britain and become an independent country.

So here’s the Declaration of Independence that I rewrote for Tangled…

When in the Course of events it becomes necessary for one to dissolve the maternal bonds which have connected mother and daughter, and to assume among the powers of the earth, to which the Laws of Nature entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal and therefore have the right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. These rights for the girl, Rapunzel, have been prevented by the tyrannical actions of her own “mother.”

In these ways has Mother Gothel prevented Rapunzel from leading a common upbringing:
She has refused to grant Rapunzel access to the outside world.
She has taken advantage of and abused the use of her daughter’s magical hair.
She has kept the girl hidden from the rest of the world for the sole purposes of her own gain.
She has deprived the girl of a normal childhood in keeping her in the tower and forbidding her from leaving.
She has taken away the girl’s ability to have been raised by her true birth mother in the way her birth mother intended – not in the case of adoption, but abduction.
She denied the girl’s right to a trip see the annual floating lights, claiming the girl to be unfit to care for herself in the outside world.
She has withheld the girl’s true identity of the Lost Princess from her for 18 years.

In every instance of these oppressions the girl has petitioned for restoration in the most humble terms: Her repeated requests have been answered only by repeated denial and verbal abuse.
The girl has formally requested on multiple accounts for her freedom, and Gothel has refused it. She has refused the girl’s freedom solely for the purpose of keeping her magical hair safe so that she may use it to her own advantages to stay eternally young.
Therefore, the representatives of the girl do, by Authority of the good People of the Kingdom, solemnly publish and declare, That Rapunzel is, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent; that she is absolved from all Allegiance to the Mother Gothel, and that all maternal connection between their false mother-daughter bond, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as a Free and Independent girl, she has full Power to do as she pleases within the law set by the King and Queen of her Kingdom and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent people may of right do.
And for the support of this Declaration, you mutually pledge to each other your Lives, your Fortunes and your sacred Honor.
